SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Santa Cruz County health officials are issuing a warning after two bats found in Scotts Valley tested positive for rabies.

The bats were picked up by Santa Cruz County Animal Services and may have come in contact with a domesticated cat. As a precautionary measure, the cat is being quarantined for six months, health officials said.

"Residents should be aware that rabies exists in the local bat population and should take all precautions to avoid contact with bats," said Todd Stosuy, supervising Santa Cruz County Animal Services field manager.

Stosuy said people who come across a dead or injured bat -- or a bat that is behaving unusually -- should not touch it and call Santa Cruz County Animal Services at 831-454-7303.

Also, anyone who has recently been in contact with a bat in the Arabian Way area of Scotts Valley should contact a health care provider about possible treatment.

If a domestic pet is found playing with an injured or wild animal, owners should call a veterinarian and Santa Cruz Animal Services, health officials said.
