EVANSVILLE, Wis. -- An effort to try and stop a controlled burn from spreading to a neighboring farm field might have cost a 63-year-old Albany man his life on Wednesday.

James Haddinger was conducting a controlled burn of some tall grass on his property when the wind changed directions and caused the fire to spread across the road into the neighbor’s field.

James’ son, Matthew Haddinger, responded with a tractor and began tilling the field to prevent the fire from spreading. James Haddinger followed behind the tractor, knocking down flames with a shovel.

Matthew eventually found James lying on the ground and summoned help from an off-duty Evansville firefighter. Both men performed CPR on James until emergency crews arrived.

Emergency units arrived on scene and took over CPR, but they were unsuccessful in reviving him.
