PHENIX CITY, AL - A 5-year-old boy died Monday after several dogs mauled him in East Alabama.
Arthur Sumbry, Russell County's Coroner, says as many as 12 dogs may have attacked Cason Bryant, 5, leaving the boy with multiple bite marks all over his body.
It happened just after one o'clock Monday afternoon at a home on McElvey Road in Phenix City. Bryant was pronounced dead around 2:30 p.m. at the hospital.
The coroner says all the dogs have been captured and sent to Auburn University for research and then to be euthanized. He believes the pack of dogs were not wild, but possibly fenced in and got out.
"I have a child myself, 6-years-old, and I have dogs," Sumbry said. "It just makes you be more aware of your child or children around pets. They're pets, but never should any pet be left unsupervised anytime. My heart goes out to the family."
The family asked a friend to speak to the media. Sarah Baker explained that the mother, Jennifer Bryant is extremely distraught, "she says she just wants to wake up and just be a dream. The father is beyond grief right now."
The boys body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy. The coroner expects a preliminary report in a few days.
