Ontario's Special Investigations Unit said Wednesday that a Toronto police officer has been charged in connection with a shooting earlier this year.
The SIU said the charge involved the fatal shooting of Eric Osawe, 26, who was shot by police on Sept. 29 after officers arrived with a search warrant at an apartment on Dunbloor Road in the Bloor Street West and Kipling Avenue area in Etobicoke.
The agency said that during the search "there was an interaction between the police and a 26-year-old man" and Osawe sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Police also arrested Ebony Osawe, 23, Eric's younger brother.
He faces a number of charges in connection with the execution of the search warrant.
The SIU said in a release that Const. David Cavanagh of the Toronto Police Services is facing one charge of manslaughter and is due in a Toronto court on Jan. 6.
The SIU will not make any further comment pertaining to this investigation, it said in a release.
The SIU is an arm's-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
