Vandalism is suspected after several fire hydrants were opened in Winnipeg's North End, flooding streets with thousands of litres of water overnight Saturday.

Police were forced to shut down streets around Church Avenue between McGregor Street and Andrews Street shortly after midnight.

In some areas, as much as 60 centimetres of water flooded the roads and began to freeze in the –21 C weather.

City crews rushed to the scene and turned the hydrants off.

Police reopened the streets Sunday morning, but motorists were being cautioned to drive carefully in the area.

Bill Clark of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said Sunday he can't understand how the hydrants opened because a specific tool is needed to do it.

"Someone has fashioned a tool of sorts to do this, or they've discovered a way to open them and are doing it," Clark said.

"That means it's a planned thing on their part, and it's a pure act of vandalism"

Police continue to investigate.
