Ottawa firefighters dig out a construction worker trapped in a collapsed trench.

An Ottawa construction worker is recovering in hospital after the sides of a trench collapsed on her.

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 1 p.m. ET Monday near the corner of Greenbank and Cambrian roads, where the worker was buried up to her waist in clay and dirt.

They needed to stabilize the trench using hydraulic jacks and other rescue equipment so that teams could enter the area and dig her out.

Eventually rescuers used a tripod and a hauling system to get the worker out of the trench and transfer her to a rescue basket.

She was taken to hospital as a precaution by a paramedic unit that had been called to help with the rescue.

The entire rescue operation took a little over an hour.
