A view of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France

The European Court of Human Rights was expected to rule Thursday on whether Ireland's strict abortion laws violate human rights.

The ruling could force the overwhelmingly Catholic republic to end its ban on abortion, which sees thousands of women travel abroad every year to terminate their pregnancies.

Three women who live in Ireland brought the suit after they became pregnant unintentionally and traveled to the United Kingdom for abortions.

All three claim they experienced medical complications when they returned to Ireland, at least in part because of the country's abortion laws.
