3 Hurt When Medical Helicopter Crashes - Kansas City News Story - KMBC Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a medical helicopter crashed Sunday morning in La Monte, injuring three crew members.

KMBC's Marcus Moore reported that the helicopter was en route to an accident call and was taking off from a helipad in La Monte when something went wrong.

"I was on the phone with my mom when it happened. I was, like, 'Oh my gosh. The helicopter crashed.' She's like, 'What?'" said Mariah Durham, a volunteer firefighter.

"The pilot crawled out on his own. He couldn't move anymore," Durham said.

The flight nurse managed to escape as well, but an air medic who could not move her legs was trapped.

After freeing her from the wreckage, all three were flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Columbia.

Witnesses said the helicopter was about 200 feet in the air when it apparently lost power. Moore reported that early indications are that it may have suffered engine trouble. The pilot managed to keep control and make a hard landing away from a nearby highway and a large tank full of jet fuel.

"The fact that he could keep it from spinning was amazing. If he had hit that tank, La Monte would be no more," said La Monte police Chief James Ulm.

Moore reported that all three crew members suffered serious injuries, but are reported to be in fair condition. They work for a medical ambulance company called Staff for Life. It is operated by Air Method.
