Nancy Ray said her family has been waiting for mail to be delivered since Dec. 2.

Some people in the Aylmer sector of Gatineau, Que., are looking for answers after Christmas cards, bills and letters meant for their mailboxes ended up abandoned in a roadside ditch.

Gatineau police said they arrested a 19-year-old woman who was working for a contractor paid by Canada Post to deliver some of the mail in the area, but released her with a promise to appear before the court. Theft charges are pending.

Police recovered the mail from the side of the road and are holding on to it, pending their investigation.

A spokesman for Canada Post said the incident is also being investigated internally.

"We don't know at this point how much mail is involved. Once the investigation is completed, any mail recovered will be forwarded to customers with a letter of apology," the post office said in a release.

But area residents are wondering why Canada Post didn't realize earlier there was a problem.
Outgoing mail affected

Nancy Ray said her family had been waiting since Dec. 2 for some deliveries of Christmas gifts.

"So every day we check our mail ... nothing, nothing, nothing. After a while, we thought that was odd," said Ray.

One day she reached into her box at the neighbourhood super-mailbox and discovered it was stuffed with outgoing mail that had yet to be picked up.

"All this mail here was our Christmas cards and our bills that we thought were being paid. And now we don't know where our things are. Some ditch somewhere?" said Ray.

Holly Hulburt said she noticed a problem a week ago when her bills did not arrive at their usual time and none of the cards she was expecting for her son's birthday appeared.

"I'm surprised it has taken so long," said Hulburt. "We knew something was going on, but we had to go seek out some assistance ourselves to get something done or even figured out. I just don't understand that."
