Drug charges have been laid against a couple from Washington state after a major cocaine seizure at the Canada-U.S. border near Grand Forks, B.C.
Scott Fleming Powers, 49 and his wife Diane Powers, 55, are accused of importing a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
They were arrested at the Carson, B.C. crossing on Dec. 16.
Canadian border officers allege they discovered 83 kilograms of cocaine in hidden compartments of the couple's 2007 Dodge Caravan and notified the RCMP.
The drugs were worth $3.5 million and police are working with U.S. agencies to trace their origin, the RCMP said in a release Thursday.
The Powers will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Jan. 13, police said.
