RCMP are advising people to stay off the highways after heavy snowfall and blizzard warnings were issued across much of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
A multi-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Calgary killed one person Saturday.
A Greyhound bus, three semis and six cars were involved in the crash near Strathmore on Saturday afternoon, said RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb.
The victim, a 68-year-old woman, was a passenger in one of the cars.
"We are highly recommending that if anyone does go out there at all that they should be reconsidering it," said Webb. "If they do go out, they should be well-prepared to exist for a long time in the weather conditions — in other words if they have to, bring lots of warm clothing and a powered-up cellphone."
Webb said the snow-covered roads made it hard to clear the highway and for officers to investigate the crash.
There were 115 car accidents in 24 hours in Calgary on Saturday, and 15 of those resulted in injuries, according to the Calgary Police Service
And in Edmonton, city spokesman Bob Dunford said it will be a lot of work just getting the snow cleared in time for the Monday morning commute.
The snow has added an extra challenge for an Edmonton community group's annual winter festival this weekend.
