A man was killed Sunday night while helping the driver of a pickup truck change a tire on the shoulder of Highway 400, just north of Toronto.

Police said the truck driver pulled over just south of Highway 89 after noticing a flat rear-left tire.

He called his company for help, and a service truck arrived, also parking on the shoulder, said OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.

"The two gentlemen attempted to change the tire," he said. "It was very dark at the time."

They were struck at about 6:15 p.m.

"A pickup truck travelling southbound in the right lane … struck both these gentlemen that were out changing the tire."

The 43-year-old Toronto man who drove the service truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release his name.

The driver he was helping was taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Woodford said the crash highlights how important it is for motorists to stay inside their vehicles if they run into trouble on the highway and have to pull over.

"The shoulders are not wide enough to be changing tires," he said. "What you should be doing is calling 911 emergency, because it is an emergency out there. And you will either get a tow truck that can tow your vehicle to a safe location or you'll get a police car that will attend the situation, and we can close down a lane if we can't remove that vehicle."

Police have not filed any charges in connection with the collision.
