People on eastern Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula were digging out Friday from the first big snowfall of the winter — and the largest ever recorded in the area for Jan. 13.

Snow and rain made driving difficult and forced the cancellation of many flights at St. John's airport Thursday.

Environment Canada said 37.8 centimetres of snow fell, breaking the record set on the same day in 1946, when 29.2 centimetres fell.

A 39-year-old woman died in a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Clarenville on Thursday morning. Police said snow was falling on slushy roads at the time.

Environment Canada forecast a couple of centimetres of snow and high winds in the St. John's area for Friday.
