Snow is blanketing Toronto for a second straight Saturday, causing havoc on the city's highways.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said that at one point Saturday morning police were getting a call a minute about minor highway collisions.

"A lot of travellers are heading north to ski country and taking advantage of the weather," Woodford said from a snowy Highway 400.

Woodford advised motorists to check on road conditions before heading out, and to leave plenty of room between themselves and the vehicle in front of them.

Environment Canada predicts snow from an Alberta clipper storm system will taper off Saturday evening, but not before 5 to10 centimetres pile up. The storm system will then move northeast, toward Ottawa.

Dave Phillips of Environment Canada called southern Ontario's heavy snowfall a big change from last year.

"Last year it was almost like we cancelled winter," Phillips said.

"We've had already, with this weekend, as much snow as we had [last year] in many places."

The City of Toronto also issued an extreme cold weather alert, which opens more shelter space to get homeless people off the streets.
