Zenon Bozynski died after being beaten on Saturday, Winnipeg police say.
A Winnipeg man beaten and left to die outside his North End home may have been killed because he was mistaken for a robber.
Zenon Bozynski, 48, died early Sunday morning in hospital. He was found badly beaten Saturday morning at the rear of a rooming house at 346 Redwood Ave., where he lived.
Police can't say exactly how long he was lying outside in the –20 C weather, but they said he was not dressed appropriately.
Police said Monday that very early Saturday morning, a woman living in another suite at the home called 911 to complain someone was banging at her door and that she thought someone was trying to break in.
She also called her brother and a friend for assistance, police said.
Time passed, and the noise stopped, so the woman called police back to say they weren't needed any more.
Const. Jason Michalyshen said two men showed up some time after that.
"These individuals attended, confronted the victim … and it appears a serious physical assault did occur," he said.
Hours later, police were called back to the scene for a report of an injured man lying outside.
Later Saturday, police arrested two men in connection to Bozynski's death and charged them with second-degree murder.
One of the suspects is the brother of the woman who initially called police, Michalyshen said.
Jamie Jossens Morrisseau, 27, of Winnipeg, and Gamielle William Harry Courchene, 25, of Fort Alexander, have been charged with second-degree murder and are in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre, police said.
Son questions why no one helped
Bozynski's son told CBC News the fact his father was left injured in the snow without anyone offering assistance is disturbing.
"It gets me questioning people in the city … if people even care," Chris Bozynski said. "It hurts knowing he was lying there for so long with nobody to help him."
He said nurses at the hospital where he died told him they might have been able to do more for his father if he had been admitted earlier.
Bozynski's death is Winnipeg's second homicide of 2011.
