Sylvain Guidi has been formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his elderly parents on the weekend.

Guidi, 47, made a brief appearance Monday afternoon at a courthouse in Joliette, Que.

Quebec provincial police said his parents, retired Longueuil police officer Claude Guidi, 72, and his wife Denise Cloutier, 73, were found shot to death in their home on Saturday. They lived in St-Jean-de-Mantha, a small town about 100 kilometres north of Montreal in the province's Lanaudière region.

Police said Sylvain Guidi called police at around 7 p.m. on Saturday to report the shootings.
'Compassionate reasons'

His lawyer, Michel Leclerc, said Monday that the deaths may be tied to "compassionate reasons."

Leclerc said Guidi told him both of his parents had health issues.

"He was suffering, his mother too. So that was his issue. He was living with them for three years and was taking care of them," said Leclerc.

"So what happened? I don't know."

Leclerc said Guidi has had emotional issues in the past and has undergone psychotherapy. His lawyer said his client is upset after the events of the weekend.

A hunting rifle police removed from the home of Guidi's parents was registered to his client, said Leclerc.

Neighbour Pierre-Paul Gagnon said the couple was well liked in the community, as was their son.

"They were good people … He was a good boy. You couldn't ask for a better son," Gagnon said.

"This is very hard to understand."

Guidi was known to police. A few years ago, he was convicted of assaulting a police officer.

He will return to court on the murder charges Jan. 26. Leclerc said it will be a month or two at least before a decision is made regarding bail.
