Robbers and assailants wielding knives figured in three Winnipeg crime reports Friday.

While the incidents took place at different times and in different parts of the city, the common feature was the use of a knife, police noted.

Police said the first incident took place around 7:15 a.m. CT at a convenience store on the 600 block of Ellice Avenue where a man armed with a knife demanded money from the clerk on duty.

"He fled the store prior to anything being obtained," police said in a release Saturday.

About 30 minutes later, however, police say the same man tried to rob another convenience store, this one on the 800 block of Arlington Street.

"A suspect male armed with a knife had entered the store and demanded money," police said. "As this was occurring, another store employee became aware of the incident and the suspect fled the store empty-handed."

Police began an intensive search of the area and arrested a suspect around 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Smith Street. Police said the same man was responsible for a three other convenience-store robberies, also wielding a knife, in April 2007.

The suspect, a 36-year-old man from Winnipeg, was taken into custody and is facing five charges.

Police reported another armed robbery around 11:15 p.m. Friday night at a business on the 100 block of Osborne Street.
Money taken

"A male suspect, having his identity disguised and while carrying a knife, attended to the cash register area and demanded money," police said. In that case, the robber did get some cash and fled.

Police said they found a suspect near the Osborne Street Bridge and have charged and detained a 30-year-old Winnipeg man.

The third case was an assault that was reported to police around 8:25 p.m. at a hotel on the 800 block of Main Street.

Police said a 33-year-old man had stab wounds and was taken to hospital. At first the man's condition was described as critical, but he improved to stable condition.

Police said they made some arrests, but no charges have been laid as they continue to sort out what happened.
