A 31-year-old Ottawa police officer has been charged with two counts of assault, police said Friday.

But police will not name the officer who is charged, and will not say what incident the charges resulted from.

"The Ottawa police will not disclose any further information on this case, in order to prevent further victimization, and in the light of the fact the matter is now before the courts," a police service news release said Friday.

The police service's professional standards section is also investigating the alleged assaults, and charges will be laid under the Police Services Act, the news release said.

Police said the officer has been reassigned to administrative duties.

"The Ottawa Police Service takes the conduct of its members very seriously and holds all sworn officers to a standard that is consistent with community expectations and their oath of office," said Chief Vern White.

"In cases where an officer is found to be in violation of these standards, discipline will be sought," he said.
