Fire struck homes at opposite ends of Newfoundland on Wednesday night.

In Paradise, just west of St. John's, firefighters were called to Summit Drive shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Flames could be seen coming out of the house, which was destroyed by the blaze. Crews with the St. John's Regional Fire Department stayed at the scene overnight.

A police investigation was scheduled to begin Thursday.

Meanwhile, fire drove a family out of its home in the Curling area of Corner Brook over the supper hour on Wednesday.

There was extensive damage in the blaze, but firefighters managed to contain it to the attic.

There was no word on the cause.
