A P.E.I. business group says the Island’s economy would be hurt if New Brunswick goes ahead with the idea of putting tolls on its side of the Confederation Bridge.

Don Reid, president of the P.E.I. Chambers of Commerce, said Island tourism and trucking would be hurt because motorists leaving the Island would face two tolls, both at the bridge on the P.E.I. side, and then again at the end of the bridge on the New Brunswick side.

Reid calls the idea a tourism killer. He also thinks putting tolls at provincial borders may be unconstitutional and open to legal challenge.

New Brunswick finance minister Blaine Higgs said he is exploring the idea of having tollbooths at every entry point into that province. The idea has been raised several times during public consultations on New Brunswick's deficit.

Reid is urging Prince Edward Island Premier Robert Ghiz to weigh in on the idea.

But Ghiz is reportedly waiting for more detailed plans from New Brunswick before speaking out.
