Boy hit by Rio Rancho school bus
Then the driver put the kid back on the bus

- A Rio Rancho boy is reported to be in satisfactory condition after being hit by a school bus early Wednesday afternoon.

The 9-year-old ran in front of the bus but then reboarded it as the driver made a couple of more stops before emergency personnel arrived, a Rio Rancho Police Department spokesman said. The boy was taken by ambulance to University of New Mexico Hospital to be treated for rib and leg injuries, the spokesman said.

In incident happened about 1:05 p.m. as the bus from Maggie Cordova Elementary School was on Wexford Road near Tarpon Avenue.

Kim Vesely with Rio Rancho Public Schools said the district is following its standard procedures and is doing its own investigation of the incident. The veteran driver already has taken a drug-and-alcohol test and been placed on paid administrative leave.

The names of the driver and the boy have been released. Police are interviewing the driver and witnesses as the investigation continues. No charges have been filed yet.
