Ergen Eyes Asia

Watch for Charlie Ergen and crew to take flight across Asia by the end of this year as Power Star Ltd, a joint venture between Ergen’s Echostar and AsiaSat, is set to begin service. The Echostar/AsiaSat JV is focused on a “Non-domestic” program license (which means it does not primarily target Hong Kong) and, according to AsiaSat, will not compete directly with local free and pay-TV operators.

The service will use the AsiaSat 5 satellite, which has 14 Ku-band and 26 C-band transponders. From its position at 100.5º East, AsiaSat 5 can reach from Russia to New Zealand, including the Middle East, Japan and parts of Africa. Dish sizes are expected to be as small as 30 cm in diameter.

According to reports from Rapid TV, Echostar has been in discussions with Middle East broadcasters and key players in India. Previously this year, Echostar has announced joint venture DTH plays in both Mexico and Taiwan.
