FRESNO, Calif. -- A man was found dead inside a burning home this morning and police are taking over the investigation from firefighters.

The damage isn't so obvious from the outside, but firefighters say one room was badly burned and there's a total of $50,000 in damage.

They got reports of gunfire before the flames broke out, and say the victim's wife had left the home with two children before the fire started. A Fresno sanitation worker saw smoke coming from the house, then noticed the wife crying as she ran away.

"Only thing I could understand her say was that her husband was still in there. As soon as she said that, I looked up because I was maybe going to go in there and help him, but I couldn't see through the doorway because it was engulfed in smoke," said witness Robert Taylor.

Investigators are not releasing the man's cause of death or even if he was found in the room with the most fire damage.
