LONDON (AFP) – Kate Middleton's parents met Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip for the first time on Wednesday, just over a week before she marries Prince William, palace officials said.
Carole and Michael Middleton were invited to Windsor Castle, the queen's residence west of London, for a private lunch. The queen is William's grandmother.
It was a "small gathering, just the queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Mr and Mrs Middleton and possibly a small number of other people", thought to be private secretaries, a spokesman for Buckingham Palace told AFP.
The Middletons met while they both worked for an airline but left to start up a mail order party supplies business, which has made them millionaires. They have three children: Kate, Pippa and James.
Kate, 29, met the queen for the first time at the marriage of William's cousin Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly in May 2008.
"It was in amongst a lot of other guests and she was very friendly," Kate recalled in an interview to mark her engagement last November.
William, 28, added in the same interview: "She had wanted to meet Kate for a while, so it was very nice for her to come over and say hello. We had a little chat and got on very well."
