WASHINGTON, Landon Donovan's successful penalty kick in the 58th minute Sunday propelled the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-1 win over D.C. United.

The winning goal came after United defender Julius James was called for a handball inside his own penalty area while blocking a shot by Los Angeles' Sean Franklin.

Edson Buddle's Major League Soccer-leading 11th goal had put the Galaxy up 1-0 at halftime.

Andy Najar tied the score for United in the 54th minute.

The Galaxy are leading the Western Conference and United is at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
