Street value of $559,000 of cannabis marijuana seized

Sault Ste. Marie OPP investigate motor vehicle collision

FISHER TWP, ON - Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers and Batchewana First Response were dispatched to a rollover motor vehicle collision at 11 a.m. today on Highway 17 North in Fisher Township involving a motor home.

A 1981 motor home with B.C. licence plates was travelling eastbound on Highway 17 when the driver crossed the centre line and proceeded into the northbound ditch, struck a tree and overturned.

The vehicle was demolished.

There were two male occupants in the vehicle.

Both occupants were transported to hospital by ambulance with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

At the scene, prior to emergency personnel arrival, the driver was observed tossing cardboard boxes into the tree line, by passing motorists who stopped to assist.

OPP officers attended the scene and further investigation revealed a total of 62 pounds of a substance believed to be cannabis marijuana with a potential street value of $559,000.

The driver, 53-year-old Michael James Morris of 140 Shawn Road, Coombs, British Columbia was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, and careless driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The passenger, 53-year-old Thomas Ben Varga of 7662 184th Street, Surrey, British Columbia was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of Ttafficking contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.

Both of the accused are being held in custody for bail court tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Sault Ste. Marie.
