Siobhan Kearns, head of outbreak management for Ottawa Public Health, said it looks like the cause could be a norovirus.

"It's of great concern. If indeed it is norovirus, the symptoms can be very nasty and uncomfortable," she said.

So far, no students have been taken to hospital, but that could happen if their condition worsens.

"We have given them IV treatment and Gravol as well. and they are responding very, very well to that," Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesman J.P. Trottier said.

Earlier, fire crews checked carbon monoxide and air quality and found nothing hazardous in the air at the hotel, Ottawa Fire Services said. Food poisoning was also ruled out.

Ottawa public health officers have also been called to investigate.

The hotel said it is following quarantine protocols
