MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) – Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be sent to the United States for a week's conditioning work in a bid to speed his return from an ankle injury.

Rooney has been sidelined for several weeks and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't expect the England star to be back in action before the end of November.

But rather than use United's facilities at their Carrington training base, Ferguson has decided to arrange for Rooney to go to the sportswear company Nike's centre in Portland, Oregon.

Rooney has also been dogged by lurid headlines about his private life following reports that he paid prostitutes for sex while his wife was pregnant with their first child.

And the move to send Rooney to Nike Town is also partly aimed at allowing him time out of the media spotlight.
