A taxicab in Winnipeg was stolen by a man wielding a gun, police say.

The carjacking happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Winnipeg's Elmwood neighbourhood.

Witnesses at the scene said a driver for the Unicity taxi company was confronted by a man with a gun. Police confirmed Saturday that a handgun was involved.

In a news release, police said the cab driver, a 32-year-old man, had been waved down by a man in the area of Springfield Road and Rothesay Street.

The driver stopped for the man, who wanted to be driven as a fare.

The cab driver said he was on his way to another fare, but would get his dispatcher to send a cab for the man.

"The suspect insisted on being driven and began damaging the interior of the cab," police said in the release. "The driver exited the cab and requested that the suspect do the same.

"The suspect then assaulted the driver," police added. "It was at this time the suspect produced a handgun, making verbal threats toward the driver."
Suspect forced driver into cab

Initially, police reported the carjacker drove off leaving the cabbie behind. Later Saturday they revealed that the man with the gun had taken the driver with him.

"The suspect then ordered the driver back into the cab, subsequently driving off with the victim as a passenger," the police update said.

"A short time later, attending members located the cab containing both the victim and suspect in the area of the 500 block of McLeod Avenue," police added.

A 20-year-old man suspected of the carjacking was apprehended and will be charged with firearms offences as well as uttering threats and impaired driving, police said.

No name was released. Police said the suspect was still in custody Saturday morning.

There was no official word from police about the condition of the cab driver. However, witnesses told CBC News early Saturday that the man was unharmed.
