Stocks up modestly

NEW YORK, U.S. markets rose modestly Monday even though the National Association of Home Builders said its business confidence index dropped in July.

NAHB said its index dropped for the second consecutive month, hitting a low unseen since April 2009. Investors mostly ignored the report, however.

In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average added 19.30 points, 0.19 percent, to 10,117.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.14 percent, 1.46, to 1,066.34. The Nasdaq composite index added 4.43, 0.2 percent, to 2,183.48.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note lost 7/32 to yield 2.95 percent.

The euro rose to $1.243 from Friday's $1.2927. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 86.76 yen from Friday's 86.67 yen.

Markets in Japan were closed Monday for a holiday.

In Britain, the FTSE 100 index shed 0.2 percent, 10.57, to 5,148.28.
