The P.E.I. Tourism Department is paying people to promote the Island through social media.

Three digital ambassadors are working their friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter to get tourists to visit P.E.I. this summer. In Toronto it's PEICristina, whose Twitter profile she says she's your "PEI Tourism Rep for Ontario, and I'm here to help you discover Prince Edward Island."

Tourism PEI marketing director Brenda Gallant told CBC News Friday it's about creating a conversation.

"When you're talking about traditional advertising you're telling people how great you are," said Gallant.

"But when you're looking at social media, it's really a two-way conversation and other people have an opportunity to comment on it."

The department also has cyber reps in Nova Scotia and on P.E.I. They keep an eye open for anyone talking about P.E.I. on either Facebook or Twitter, and they join the conversation. It's paying the Ontario-based PR firm Mosaic $40,000 a year to oversee its social media presence.

"What's most important is that the person can go online, find the questions that people may have and direct them to the right people who can answer those questions," said company spokesman Trevor Hand.

"That's paramount, versus having someone that's an expert on P.E.I. but not really understand the social dynamics and how it works online." Brenda Gallant said more social media ambassadors could be hired next year to work in other geographic markets.
