New York -- One person died and three others were injured Sunday when a single-engine plane crashed near Farmingdale, New York, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The pilot of the plane was apparently making a practice landing when the incident occurred, said FAA spokesman Jim Peters. The pilot was cleared to perform a "touch and go" short landing, but maneuvered a "low approach" instead, Peters said. The pilot was among the survivors of the 9 a.m. ET crash.

The three people injured were in the plane, according to Suffolk County police. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
