2 killed in small plane crash in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine, A small plane crashed Saturday afternoon near the airport in Portland, Maine, killing two people on board, police said.

Witnesses told the Portland Press Herald the plane had just taken off from Portland International Jetport about 3:30 p.m. and looked like it was banking into a turn that would take it back to the airport.

The plane was a YAK-52, a two-seat trainer originally manufactured in the Soviet Union and now made in Romania.

Police had not released the identities of the two casualties Saturday evening. The Press Herald said the plane was registered to Mark Haskell of Brunswick, Maine.

Courtney Lowe, a Dunkin Donuts employee, said she saw the plane shortly before the crash, and it appeared to be flying very low.

Western Avenue, a busy street running near the airport and an area of shopping malls and big-box stores, was expected to be closed into the evening, officials said.
