TOBYHANNA, Pa. – A man who kidnapped a boy in northeastern Pennsylvania was killed and two state police troopers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire after a Sunday night chase that ended in the Pocono Mountains, police said.
The chase began outside Easton and ended about 40 miles away in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, when the suspect crashed his car, according to Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief Harry Lewis. He said the suspect and police then traded gunfire.
One trooper was taken to Community Medical Center in Scranton and the other to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
The boy who was in the car with the suspect was being checked for injuries, but Lewis said he was not shot.
Nazareth police Chief Michael Sinclair said the chase began around 7:45 p.m. following a custody dispute at a home on Union Street.
Police have not yet determined the relationship between the boy, who was taken from the home, and the suspect, Lewis said.
Police did not release the names of the troopers or the suspect.
