Teen shot, killed by Edmonton police officer

A 17-year-old youth is dead after being shot by an Edmonton police officer near Rexall Place early Saturday morning.

Police were responding to several weapons and attempted robbery complaints connected to a mugging at the Coliseum ETS station on 118 Avenue, near Wayne Gretzky Drive, just after midnight.

Officers chased three suspects, locating and arresting two near Rexall Place.

Police found the third suspect near 118 Avenue, between the north and southbound portions of Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Clifton Purvis, the executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), said the suspect came at police armed with a knife and a baseball bat.

One officer fired three shots, wounding the 17-year-old suspect. The teen was taken to hospital where he died during emergency surgery. His name hasn't been released.

The name of the officer involved also has not been released, but police say he has been with the force for five years.

It is not clear whether charges have been laid against the two suspects who were arrested. Their names and ages have not been released.

ASIRT, an independent body that looks at all incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death resulting from the actions of a police officer, is investigating.
