2 quakes shake Southern California
BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif., (UPI) -- Back-to-back earthquakes rattled the Southern California community of Borrego Springs Saturday night, seismologists said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said preliminary readings put the first temblor at 8:08:56 local time at a magnitude of 4.9, followed by a second one 24 seconds later that was marked at 4.5. The first quake was at at depth of 3.6 miles and centered about 9 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs, 32 miles south-southeast of Palm Springs and 59 miles northeast of San Diego, the USGS said, while the second was centered about a mile from the first.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said there were no calls received of damage or injuries. The newspaper said some sportswriters covering the San Diego-Seattle baseball game at Petco Park felt the quake in the press box.

USGS geophysicist Dale Grant categorized the quakes as moderate and of similar strength to others felt frequently throughout Southern California, the Union-Tribune said.

Grant said the shaking was felt as far north as Anaheim. Several minor aftershocks were recorded in the 15 minutes after the initial quakes.

The Orange County Register reported the quakes were felt in communities across Orange County.
