2 Virginia firefighters die in crash
ROCKY MOUNT, Va., Two Rocky Mount, Va., firefighters were killed Monday when their fire truck crashed and flipped en route to a fire in a neighboring community, officials said.
The city's mayor, a county fire marshal and a witness told The Roanoke Times the fire truck collided with a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Old Franklin Turnpike and Route 220, flipped multiple times and landed upside down on top of a convertible.
The fire truck was responding to a fire in Penhook, the Times said.
The newspaper said one person was removed from the fire truck and flown by helicopter to a hospital and another person was pinned under the truck.
It wasn't known whether occupants of the SUV and convertible were injured, the newspaper said.
