20 drownings reported across U.S
CHARLOTTE, N.C., The past three summer days were deadly across the United States, with at least 20 people drowning in lakes, rivers and pools, authorities said.
Authorities in Fort Wayne, Ind., weren't sure if a 21st person, whose body was pulled from a pond Sunday, had drowned. Fort Wayne's WPTA-TV reported an autopsy was to be performed to determine the cause of death.
The New York Times reported two teenagers drowned in the Bronx River Sunday afternoon in an area near a dam that's off-limits for swimming. David Luccioni III, 17, jumped in to save Crystal Reyes, 15, and they both died, witnesses told the Times.
WBTV-TV, Charlotte, N.C., reported rescue crews searched Lake Norman near Cornelius, N.C., Sunday for two boys, ages 11 and 17, who apparently drowned while swimming from a boat in choppy waters. Two other family members got out of the water safely, the TV station said.
Authorities in Maryland, citing darkness, called off a search Sunday night for a young male believed to have drowned in Liberty Reservoir in Finksburg,
the Carroll County Times in Westminster, Md., reported.
A 35-year-old Philadelphia man drowned Sunday at Cape May Beach in New Jersey, the Cape May County Herald reported.
A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Black River in Wisconsin Saturday evening while fishing and swimming with a friend, WKBT-TV, LaCrosse reported Sunday. His body was recovered early Sunday but his name had yet to be released.
Seattle's KOMO-TV reported a 33-year-old woman drowned in the Puyallup River Saturday night after slipping on rocks and falling into the water. The body of Shannon Hunter was recovered about 2 miles down river.
In Oklahoma, Tulsa radio station KRMG reported Verdell Schoats, 40, drowned in Skiatook Lake Saturday night. Oklahoma authorities were looking for the body of a man believed to have drowned while diving in the Chikaskia River Friday and another man drowned in the Arkansas River at Tulsa Friday.
In Arizona, AZFamily.com reported Madison Richards, 5, Glendale, died after being pulled from a back yard swimming pool during a party Saturday night.
The Kansas City Star reported a 27-year-old man and 7-year-old girl from the Kansas City area drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming at Smithville Lake. Earlier in the day, a man in his 20s fell into Wyandotte County Lake and drowned, the newspaper said.
New England cable news network NECN reported twins Veronica and Angelina Andreottola, 2 1/2 years, drowned Saturday in a partially covered pool near their home in Lynnfield, Mass.
Shirley Clark, 48, drowned in a tributary of the James River in Nelson County, Va., Saturday, WVIR-TV, Charlottesville, Va., reported.
A 17-year-old boy from Brooklyn, Mich., drowned at a Lake Michigan beach Friday, WWMT-TV, Kalamazoo, reported.
In Minnesota, Daniel Gulbrandson, 26, of Minneapolis drowned in Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis Friday, the Albert Lea Tribune reported.
There also were several near-drownings.
KCAL-TV, Los Angeles, said a man was hospitalized in grave condition after being pulled from an apartment complex swimming pool in Tujunga.
WISN-TV, Milwaukee, said a 6-year-old child was recovering after almost drowning in a motel swimming pool in Shebobygan County.
KVOA-TV, Tucson, Ariz., said a 4-year-old boy nearly drowned in a swimming pool before being rescued by his grandmother;a 2-year-old boy was pulled from the pool at the North Arundel Aquatic Center in Glen Burnie, Md., Sunday.
An 18-year-old male from New Rochelle, N.Y., was rescued from Candlewood Lake in New Milford, Conn., by a 23-year-old man who saw him go under while swimming, The (Danbury, Conn.) News-Times reported.
