3 charged with hate crimes in Seattle

SEATTLE, -- Three suspects in Washington state have been charged with painting racist and anti-Semitic graffiti on a church and two schools, police said.
Jared Reed Kadish, 19, of Seattle and the two 17-year-olds boys allegedly caused about $1,500 in damage to Island Park Elementary School, St. Monica Catholic Church and Northwest Yeshiva High School in September, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Wednesday.
The accused vandals painted swastikas and made references to gas chambers, the Mercer Island Police Department, social services and minority groups, and defaced religious statues at the church Detective Chad Schumacher said.
Police started getting tips that the three had been bragging about their alleged crimes, Schumacher said.
Mercer Island police served a search warrant Oct. 6 at the suspects' homes and said they discovered a gas mask, drugs, cans of spray paint and other items, the Post-Intelligencer reported.
Schumacher said Kadish offered a confession Oct. 8 after agreeing to meet with officers at his lawyer's office, but denied spray painting anything at the Jewish high school, saying the others were responsible for the damage there.
Kadish was charged with malicious harassment, the state's hate crime law. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 27 in Seattle. He remained in jail as of Wednesday evening.
The 17-year-olds face similar charges in juvenile court and are expected to be arraigned the same day.
