Three people were killed Thursday when an SUV plunged into an icy reservoir in southwestern Alberta.

Canmore fire Chief Todd Sikorsky confirmed that one woman survived the crash into the Spray Lakes Reservoir, about 100 kilometres west of Calgary. She is in stable condition at Canmore hospital, Sikorsky said.

All the vehicle's occupants were in their 40s to 50s, he said. Two women and one man were killed.

At about 3:30 p.m., the Ford Escape SUV was travelling on Spray Lakes Road when it veered off into the reservoir. It plunged through ice and sank into water about six feet deep.

One woman made it out of the vehicle, where she was picked up by passersby and brought to hospital, RCMP said. Two other people travelling by stopped, entered the water and removed the others from the SUV.

"Upon our arrival, we had two more patients removed from the vehicle by bystanders [and] CPR was in progress on those two individuals," said Sikorsky. "And our ice technicians, along with [RCMP and] Alberta Parks, removed the fourth from the rear seat of the vehicle."

"It's a very tragic end to the year, for sure."

The three later died in hospital.

RCMP wouldn't release the names of the dead, pending notification of next-of-kin.

Sikorsky said he couldn't comment on whether speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash, but noted the gravel road was covered in snow at the time.
