A P.E.I. Supreme Court Justice has sentenced a man who went on a day-long, drug-induced crime spree to six years in prison.

The sentence was a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence.

William Sturgess, 28 of Montague, pleaded guilty to a string of break ins, robberies and arson last April. Jonathan Ryan Compton has already been sentenced to six years for his part in the joy ride.

High on a mix of wine, marijuana and prescription drugs, the duo started their spree in Wood Islands, P.E.I., where they broke into three cottages and stole a car. They robbed a gas station in Borden-Carleton on their way to New Brunswick and got lost in Aulac, running the car off the road and setting it on fire.

Police picked up the two men hitchhiking near the burning car. They were still carrying the stolen cigarettes, chocolates and cash.

On Friday, the court heard that Sturgess doesn't usually abuse prescription drugs but is a regular marijuana user and has 15 prior convictions.

In accepting the joint recommendation, Supreme Court Justice John Mitchell said even if Sturgess' judgment was clouded by drugs and alcohol, there was some premeditation involved.

The judge ordered Sturgess to make restitution to the cottage owners and stores he robbed, but seemed doubtful the victims would ever receive their money because Sturgess already owes $11,000 in unpaid fines.
