69 vehicles smashed in Phoenix pileups

PHOENIX, -- Sixty-nine vehicles were smashed in multiple pileups on westbound Interstate 10 in Phoenix, authorities said.
State and local authorities said everyone involved escaped without any life-threatening injuries, though seven were seriously hurt in the 6 p.m. Saturday crashes, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported. Between 30 and 40 people suffered minor injuries.
The Arizona Republic reported Phoenix fire officials said one pileup alone involved 35 vehicles and covered a 2 1/2-mile stretch of the highway.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials blamed the accidents on thunderstorms that hit Phoenix about that time, the Republic reported.
"The rain came down hard and fast," said Sgt. Robert Bailey, a Public Safety Department spokesman.
"This is all definitely weather related. It caught a lot of drivers by surprise."
