8,000 in Baltimore get incorrect tax bills

BALTIMORE, Maryland tax officials in Baltimore said nearly 8,000 people in the city received incorrect property tax bills due to a computer programming error.

Owen Charles, a supervisor with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation office in Baltimore, said the error in the office's database altered the dollar amounts of tax credits for thousands of homeowners and the erroneous information was sent to the city to create bills, The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday.

Charles said some of the affected homeowners received bills that were too high or too low, sometimes by thousands of dollars, while others erroneously received past-due notices for the tax year that ended June 30.

"Believe me, this certainly was not intended," Charles said. "Most of these accounts should be rectified early next week."

Henry Raymond, director of the Baltimore Bureau of Revenue Collections, said notices informing homeowners of the error will be mailed next week.
