A man who called 911 and then tried to run down the Montreal officers who responded is in hospital after being shot by police, officials say.

Provincial police investigators closed down a large perimeter around the scene Wednesday after the incident near Decarie Boulevard and Jean-Talon Street in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.

At around 1 a.m. a man in his 40s called 911 from his car, and when officers arrived on the scene the man tried several times to run them down, police said.

"Apparently the man charged police officers a few times with his car, and gunshots were fired towards the suspect," said Montreal police Const. Anie Lemieux.

Lemieux said officers shot and wounded the suspect, but the extent of his injuries was unknown.

One officer is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his legs.

Three other officers were treated for nervous shock.

The investigation has been handed off to provincial police at the request of the Ministry of Public Safety.

The perimeter set up by investigators affected traffic Wednesday morning and closed the Namur Metro station.

The Montreal Transit Corporation is offering a shuttle for passengers hoping to use the station.
