Police in Strathmore, Alta., say a man was arrested after he allegedly tried to drown his infant daughter in a lake Friday evening.
strathmore, abStrathmore, Alta.

Strathmore RCMP were called to Kinsmen Lake at about 5 p.m. MT to reports that a drunk man was trying to drown a small child.

When officers arrived on scene, they interviewed several witnesses who said they watched an intoxicated man walk into the lake with his infant daughter and appeared to be trying to drown the child.

Witnesses and a friend of the man ran into the water, took the 20-month-old infant away from her father and called 911.

Police found the man, who they described as "heavily intoxicated," sitting near the lake and placed him under arrest.

The man and his infant daughter were taken to Strathmore Hospital. Both have since been released.

Police say witnesses could not tell if the male was intentionally trying to drown his daughter or whether he may have thought he was giving the girl a bath.

The child is in the custody of Child and Family Services.

The RCMP and Child and Family Services Continue are investigating and charges are pending.
