MAHWAH, N.J.—
A New Jersey college has banned a popular caffeinated alcoholic beverage fearing they could lead to what officials call "blackout in a can."

Ramapo College in Mahwah took the action after nearly two dozen students were hospitalized for alcohol poisoning soon after the start of the fall semester.

Police Chief James Batelli tells The Record newspaper, college students aren't the only ones consuming the fruity drinks that apparently deliver a sift punch of stimulants and booze. Batelli says complaints were brought against three Mahwah High School students after they were found to have or be intoxicated by Four Loko.

The drink has an alcohol content of 12 percent. It is sold only in liquor stores in New Jersey. But it might be available in convenience stores in other states.

The beverage also reportedly played a part in the recent disturbing anti-gay beatings of four men in the Bronx. According to NYPD officials, one of the victims was forced by his assailants to drink 10 cans of Four Loko during the brutal attack. The intake of alcohol left the victim's memory of the beating foggy and unclear, investigators said.
