A fire tore through three stories of a partially vacant apartment building in the 300 block of Winnipeg's Carlton Street overnight.
Streets in the area, near Portage Avenue, were closed for several hours after emergency services received a call at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday.
Yasir Abshir, who lives nearby, said he saw smoke billowing from the top of the building and called 911 after he got closer and spotted flames.
"I thought the whole apartment was going to burn," Abshir said.
No one was hurt in the fire, and investigators had no early word on its cause. Damage was estimated at $500,000. Elsewhere, a kitchen fire in a apartment unit in Elmwood saw a couple and their five-month-old infant taken to hospital Friday night.
The Winnipeg Fire Department was dispatched to 220 Jamison Ave., near Henderson Highway, shortly before midnight.
Fire officials say smoke from a pot of grease on a stove filled the apartment suite.
A 24-year-old man suffered second degree burns, while a 21-year-old woman and their baby suffered smoke inhalation.
An ambulance took them to Health Sciences Centre.
