A man is facing 20 charges after a police investigation into a shooting and firebombing at a home in west-end Toronto.

Police say a business dispute between two men led to shots being fired at the home a few weeks before the house was destroyed by fire on Boxing Day.

It's alleged that one of the men threatened the other man's family on several occasions, in attempts to extort money from him.

Police said that on Dec. 3, the man who made the threats went to the other man's house and fired shots into the front door and into a parked vehicle, while the man's wife and two young children were home.

A few days later on Dec. 6, police believe the man returned to the home with two other men and threw four firebombs at the front of the house, again while family members were inside. The family was able to escape the fire uninjured.

Atanas Markov, 26, of Toronto, faces 20 charges including three counts of threatening death and four counts of attempted murder, as well as extortion and firearms-related offences.

Markov is to appear in court at 1000 Finch Ave. W. on Friday morning.

Toronto police and the Ontario Fire Marshal are still investigating the Dec. 26 fire and no charges have been laid in that incident.

Police said the accused is known to use several aliases, including Michael Goldstein, Romanov Alexander, Basamir Gatsalov, Alexander Stoianov, Alexander Koln and Petros Stanopol.

Anyone who has had any dealings with the accused, or has any other information about the case, can contact police or Crime Stoppers.
