NEW YORK, -- A newborn improbably survived being thrown down a trash chute and into a compactor Sunday, New York police said.

Police told the New York Daily News the building's superintendent heard the baby crying from inside a plastic trash bag about 9:20 a.m.

The baby was rushed from the Brooklyn housing project at 102 Cumberland Walk to Brooklyn Hospital, were he was in stable condition, the newspaper said.

It was not known how far the baby fell.
Police were searching the area around the building for leads on the baby's mother.

"That's just sad and pitiful. They need to burn in hell, that's what they need to do," resident Tisha Holmes told the newspaper. "People are shocked here. They could've given it to anybody. Ain't nobody in their civil mind would do that."
