LONDON (AFP) – Any remaining Britons still in Libya were urged Tuesday to make their way to Benghazi to board a British navy destroyer on its way to the port.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "HMS York is on her way to Benghazi to pick up any remaining British nationals who wish to leave.

"The FCO is asking anyone who is able safely to get to Benghazi to do so now.

"There is a rapid deployment team on board to provide consular assistance."

Another British naval ship, HMS Cumberland, docked at Benghazi twice last week to pick up hundreds of foreign nationals fleeing the country.

Some 600 Britons have been evacuated from Libya over the past few days, by ship and in daring aerial missions believed to have involved British special forces.

British officials say there are only a "very small" number left in Libya who want to leave the country.
